What Is Trommel Screen And How It Works?

Trommel screen is a cylindrical type of screening equipment with a huge role in solid-waste and mineral processing industries. The word “trommel” means a drum in German language, so the trommel screens are commonly related to the German known durability. Trommel screens have production rates from 20 to over hundreds of yards per hour, depending on the model. From a wide range of different trommel screen models, the operators can easily match their applications with the most suitable trommel screen. A typical trommel screen features a cylindrical drum, as a main component, because the whole screening process takes place there. If there is differences between models, the design of the drum is certainly the biggest difference.

The drum is the most important component of every trommel screen, as the capacity of the trommel screens is depending on it. When choosing a trommel screen, the operators need to pay attention on what type of drum will suit their application best. The size of the drum is also an important consideration, because the production capacity is mainly determined by. Different trommel screen manufacturers offer different production capacities. However, the most commonly used types of drums are inclined screen cloth drums and whole-spiral drums.

Trommel screens are commonly compared with vibrating screens and they come with much more advantages over them. One big advantage of the trommel screens is that they are affordable to own and operate. Also, they have a robust structure, which means they are much more durable than the vibrating screens. Most trommel screens today feature two conveyors, one for fine materials and one for the over  materials. In the past, the trommel screens featured two separate conveyors for stacking materials, but it is still an efficient method for creating larger piles of materials without moving the trommel screens. However, trommel screens with two separate conveyors are significantly less flexible and more expensive.

People who buy a trommel screen for the first time may not see differences between trommel screen models. The only thing that can be recognized is how fast the material goes through the trommel screen, but they can never recognize how well the trommel screen separates and screens materials. The performance of the trommel screens is based on their ability to screen a high percentage of fine materials in a specific amount of time to a serious extent. However, to find the best balance of screening ability and production capacity the operators can experiment a little.
